My fellow white people, the Black Lives Matter movement isn’t about you. I know as white people, this particular concept can sometimes be hard to grasp. That sometimes shit just isn’t about us. But I promise you, it will be okay. It doesn’t always have to be about us. This is a sentiment I sincerely wish someone would have been able to teach the fascist, orange boil on the butt of humanity that some people call President. But as is my point, this isn’t about white people or orange people, so I’m not going to go off about how Trump is antibiotic resistant, super bacteria in man form. We’ll just move along…
Simply because people participate in the walk for breast cancer, that doesn’t take anything away from the severity of prostate cancer. I don’t think that anyone is confused by that. This…
Is not perceived as a threat to prostate cancer survivors. We are capable of caring about boobs and prostates at the same time.
So let’s apply that to BLM. There are two things that all white people need to remember. This is the first, as I said, it’s not about you. The second is that equality is not a zero sum game. Marching for black lives, neither devalues white lives nor does it take away rights from white people. It’s not like civil rights are marbles, where we have a finite number and we’re scrambling to collect as many as we can. FYI, Trump would suck at marbles, because his hands are so itty-bitty. (Sorry! I know, this isn’t about him).
These are abstract concepts, and as such there’s no taking away from one to give to another. They can be bestowed evenly upon all. So BLM is NO threat to any white person.
Now, to the real crux of the issue. ALL LIVES DON’T MATTER.
When you say “All lives matter” not only are you coopting something that you have no right or need to take, but you’re ignoring the real problem. As a white person, your life ALREADY matters. You don’t need to reinforce that. It’s reinforced every day, in every way by our society. White lives have ALWAYS mattered. Do you want proof? You never felt the need to say this..
Until black people said…
You just didn’t have to, therefore it never occurred to you to say it. You didn’t feel like your life was devalued. Probably because it wasn’t. And on a side note, one of these woman could reasonably be shot for holding up her sign and the other has a good chance of becoming a Fox News host. I’ll let you decide which one is which.
Now, I know that some of you so very much want to be victims and it pains me to tell you this, but you’re not. I’m lying. That did not pain me at all. One, because I’m not a victim. And two, because if you think as a white person you’re experiencing persecution in the U.S.A. you desperately need to hear it. Any white man or woman, who believes they face hardships solely due to the color of their skin has the same amount of insight into what racism actually is, as my toaster does. In fact, my toaster probably has you beat.
Saying “All lives matter” is the same as saying “I don’t see color”. Of course you, as a white person don’t see color. YOU DON’T HAVE TO. That’s your PRIVILEGE. Also, white people by definition are colorless, but that’s beside the point. The color of your skin is never going to be why you don’t get a job, or why a clerk is following you around in the store, or a cop pulls you over for no apparent reason. So you can ignore it. However when you do so, you ignore racism. The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one, and let’s face it, we have a racism problem.
That’s why the specificity of saying black is so important. We don’t need to fight for ALL lives, we need to fight for BLACK lives, because they are the people facing systemic, institutional racism. You, as a white person are not. And it is not our place to explain to black people what racism is, or how it effects our society. That’s called “White-Splaining”. And the only thing more obnoxious than white-splaining, is someone doing it while wearing a sweater vest. Which, in case you didn’t know, is the preferred uniform for white-splainers all over the country.
Like, no way this dude isn’t a douche canoe. He’s totally the president of the “Young Conservatives” club at his high school. I’d bet my left tit on it.
So no, white folks we are not the experts on how it feels to be subjected to centuries worth of institutional racism. We are the experts on how to perpetrate it.
And whether you’re the incredibly creepy looking mother fucker front and center in the picture or not, it doesn’t matter. Because the actions of these assholes ensured that you get to maintain a privileged status. Even 100 years later. So now it’s time for us to shut up and listen to black people.
You’re so caught up in “fair” that you’re missing “justice”. Something being fair, is not the same as something being just. Fair is everyone being treated the same. Justice, is receiving what you deserve. Us white people don’t deserve to be marching through the streets, insisting on racial equality. Because we don’t need to.
This is me…
For the record, I’d like to state that I’m only wearing Orioles shit because I lost a bet, but that’s not why I posted this picture. Nor was it to show off that, as I’ve stated, my head is disproportionately large for my body. The reason I’m posting this is because I am not Trayvon. I’m not Philando. I’m not Sandra. I’m not Eric. I’m not Oscar, Stephon, Freddie, Alton, Tamir, Walter, Michael… The list is infinite.
And THAT is the whole point. Because I’m the white woman with the giant head, who doesn’t have the one thing they all share.
